2020 was a pretty unusual landscape to release an album into. But last year Claire Birchall, along with thousands of other Aussie indie artists, did exactly that. Running in Slow Motion was released in April 2020, to fabulous response. But no album launch, no Australian tour. To a die-hard musician such as Claire, this was pretty tough. She made it work though, doing live streams from her home and backyard, self-producing a couple of amazing video clips for the singles off her album with her partner artist Matt Green and making appearances in online festivals both here, in France and the USA. So, we‘re VERY excited that now, a little over a year since her fantastic album came out, that we’re finally able to put on a proper Album Launch for RUNNING IN SLOW MOTION. (details below).

She has also recorded a new digital single, a cover of Iggy Pop’s wonderful ISOLATION (written with David Bowie). I wonder what inspired her to do that? It’s a dark and gorgeous and heart-wrenching rendition.

“I made a lot of mixtapes last year during lockdown. It was a good time filler, and a nice way to delve into the record collection. But due to the doom and gloom of the pandemic, there ended up being a hell of a lot of lonely/isolation themed songs on the tapes. Some of the most depressing mixtapes probably ever made, but a fitting soundtrack for all those hours hanging out in the backyard with the boombox. I’d never really given Iggy Pop’s ‘Blah-Blah-Blah’ much of a chance before. Then ‘Isolation’ made it onto one of those mixtapes, and I became a little obsessed with it. What a great song. The time was right, and I just had to cover it.” CB
